Other Side of the Coin: What's it Like Being a Home Educator?
Other Side of the Coin: What's it Like Being a Home Educator?
The benefits of hiring a Home Educator through Intention Education are obvious. They give kids and teens the opportunity to learn, in person, with an enthusiastic, helpful student—all at a fraction of the price of a normal tutor. To foster this environment, however, one must not only consider the mindset of the student; the educator's personality, experience, and way of doing things are also important. If the educator, client and student are all on the same wavelength, amazing things can happen—and they can benefit your young learner greatly. I hope that by reading my story as a Home Educator, you can get into the mindset of how we teach, and apply that experience to your students.
My "Way of Doing Things"
I've been a Home Educator since October 2020, and I teach basic martial arts to three seventh-graders. Like all teachers, I've run into my own set of unique victories, challenges and "moments"—I laugh when one of the boys playfully dig at each other, take pride in having them do their kicks just right, and discuss their technique with them when they aren't quite getting it. It's easy to think that my favorite part of class is laughing and goofing off right along with them—however, that's not quite true. My favorite part of working with these three is going back, refining their technique, and refining my own; as they finish up their tenth side kick, I watch, looking for more ways to communicate effectively to them and help them grow further. These three understand what I'm doing, and become more motivated as a result; during our classes, we all work hard, both teacher and student, benefitting all of us as a result.
So, What's the Upshot?
I (and most every Home Educator) have a growth mindset; we believe that challenge leads to learning. We strive to get on your students' wavelength, throwing memes, rewards, and insight into the mix to keep them happy and motivated. We don't just do this to help your students learn—by working through these challenges, our Home Educators learn just as much as their students do. It's the purest form of a win-win relationship—and your student can be a part of it.
